This Hoi An Sushi Restaurant is Serving Up Sushi Birthday Cakes

Surely there are some people out there who have enough restraint to not order a sushi birthday cake when it’s on the menu in front of them - but lucky for you, we are not those people. It wasn’t our birthday, even through the Chef wished us Happy Birthday - but it was a Tuesday and that counts for something.

That was our first visit to Wakaku, and it wasn’t our last.

The Sushi birthday cake arrives at your table demanding more attention than a twenty-something during her birthday week with a cloud of dry ice fog dancing over two layers of meticulously crafted sushi. You can choose from a sashimi cake (1,200,000 VND) or a sushi/nigri cake (750,000).

For the pals that aren’t into sushi, you’ve still got options. Try the skewers (60,000 VND for two). If you’re dining with toddlers, or pals with the tastebuds of toddlers, the teriyaki chicken is mild and served with leeks on a skewer. It’s important to note that it comes with two skewers, something we didn’t realize the first time we visited - and ended up with a sushi birthday cake and eight skewers, for the two of us.

It’s good we came hungry.

Let’s talk cocktails. At 75,000 per cocktail, the classic inspired cocktails are worth a try - or worth making your way through the menu to find your favourite.

Wakaku is open daily 4 p.m. to late, and located at 39 Đào Duy Từ in Hoi An.
